Calculator implementation coming soon. This calculator is being developed and will be available shortly.

This calculator estimates the amount of gravel needed based on area dimensions and desired depth. Results include cubic yards, tons, and coverage area.

How It Works

Gravel Volume Formula

Volume = (L × W × D ÷ 27)

Volume in cubic yards equals length times width times depth (in feet), divided by 27.

Convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12

Calculate area in square feet: length × width

Calculate volume in cubic yards: area × depth (in feet) ÷ 27

Important Notes:

  • One cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet at 3 inches deep
  • Standard gravel weighs approximately 1.4 tons per cubic yard
  • Different gravel types have different densities
  • Always order 10-15% extra for compaction and settling

Worked Example

A rectangular driveway 10 feet by 20 feet, 2 inches deep.

Inputs:

  • area Type:rectangle
  • length:20
  • width:10
  • depth:2
  • gravel Type:standard

Result:

You'll need approximately 1.23 cubic yards of gravel, weighing about 1.72 tons, covering 200 square feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the area in square feet by the desired depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Order 10-15% extra for compaction.
For walkways and patios, 2-3 inches is usually sufficient. For driveways, use 4-6 inches or more to support vehicle weight.
A cubic yard of standard gravel typically weighs about 1.4 tons (2,800 lbs). This can vary depending on the type of gravel and moisture content.
