Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. This calculator helps you determine if your weight is within a healthy range.

How It Works

BMI Formula

BMI = (weight × 703) / (height × height)

BMI equals weight in pounds times 703, divided by height in inches squared.

BMI uses a mathematical formula to calculate weight status

The formula was developed in the 19th century by Adolphe Quetelet

703 is the conversion factor for metric to imperial units

Important Notes:

  • BMI is a general screening tool and does not measure body fat directly
  • BMI may overestimate body fat in athletes and underestimate it in older adults
  • Always consult a healthcare provider for personalized health advice

Worked Example

An adult who is 68 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds.

Inputs:

  • height:68
  • weight:150

Result:

Their BMI is approximately 22.8, which falls within the Normal weight range.
